Micro Urbanism: The Power of Small
Flanders is one of the most dispersed urbanized areas of Europe, based on a dense network of small urban cores, fine maze-like infrastructure systems, fragmented landscape and decentralized productivity. The lack of high density urban concentration took the front stage in decades of urban discourse on the Flanders Nebulous City. This lecture will take a closer look at emerging urban strategies that embrace the dispersed condition of Flanders and its peripheral inhabited landscapes. By accepting the power of small interventions, nonhierarchical models, bottom-up spatial initiatives and multiplicity a micro-urbanism strategy is developed and tested in concrete cases.
