The Web lives from the multitude and diversity of its content providers. This situation has become even more salient with the success of the Social Web, where a much larger and very active community of users has become involved in contributing content to the Web. However, the resulting diversity of content is not systematically analysed and exploited by todays search and information access technology. This talk motivates the need for diversity-aware technologies and discusses methods and components required for enabling such technology. Furthermore, two example technologies, that can help in making diversity an asset in information access, are presented in the talk: On of them focuses on diversity-aware search and its evaluation, the second one on time as a central dimension of diversity. The presented technologies have been developed in the European FET project LivingKnowledge.
